Scientist I, II or Senior Scientist – Electron Microscopy

At NanoImaging Services, we use advanced Cryo-EM to aid in drug discovery, development and delivery for pharmaceuticals and other biotech companies. The San Diego Lab Operations group, which is responsible for all projects from sample prep to data collection, is looking for a motivated and organized team player with prior experience in EM. 

This role will report directly to the site’s lab operations manager. The scientist will be responsible for operating electron microscopes, planning projects and coordinating with respective project managers, lab technicians and other microscopists to complete assigned projects.

Reports to:  Manager of Lab Operations

  • Collecting data on an electron microscope using a highly automated data acquisition pipeline
  • Preparing and loading samples for Microscope Imaging and Data Collection
  • Troubleshooting and optimization of problematic samples for EM
  • Evaluating data/digital electron micrographs as they are collected to ensure high quality and requirements
  • Analyzing and solving problems with the microscopes efficiently to minimize down time
  • Closely collaborating with other teams and Lab Operations members to ensure that projects are completed within demanding deadlines and to the highest quality possible
  • Maintaining accurate records and performing data entry of all project work using the in-house LIMS system. 
  • Receiving and intaking of client samples   
  • Assisting in onboarding of new team members
  • A Bachelor’s or master’s degree in biology, Chemistry, Physics, Biochemistry, Biophysics, material science, Bioengineering, Engineering, or a related area in life sciences 
  • Minimum of one year of experience with (TEM/SEM/STEM) electron microscopy
  • Be comfortable handling technically advanced and sensitive equipment 
  • Be comfortable carrying out complicated assignments and working with delicate materials 
  • Basic computer skills and willingness to learn new operating systems and advanced software 
  • Willingness and ability to learn quickly and adapt to changes
  • Be self-motivated and have excellent oral and written English communication skills
  • Be able to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment 
  • Be able to follow verbal and written instructions with careful attention to detail

The following qualifications would be considered a plus: 

  • Previous experience in investigating biological specimens, particularly single particles (Protein, Viruses, etc)
  • Previous experience working in a GLP or GMP environment 
  • Previous experience in using a LIMS system
